Listen

Before we propose anything, we listen. We learn how your business actually runs today, what is already working, and where the numbers feel unclear, late, or stressful — so anything we plan fits your reality, not a template.

Most finance engagements go wrong at the very start, when an advisor arrives with a fixed playbook and quietly bends your business to fit it. The result is a process that looks tidy on paper but fights how you actually operate — so it gets worked around, and within a few months you are back where you started.

Why it matters

Listening first is what prevents that. When we genuinely understand how money moves through your business, who touches it, and which numbers you cannot currently trust, the plan that follows is shaped around you. It is slower at the front and far cheaper over the life of the relationship, because we are not redoing work built on a guess.

What this looks like in practice

  • A working conversation about how your business runs — not a sales pitch.
  • A look at your current books, tools, and reports, exactly as they are today.
  • A map of who does what now, and where things get stuck or duplicated.
  • The questions you cannot currently answer about your own numbers, written down.
  • No proposals until we can describe your finance function back to you accurately.

How we run this step

We treat the first conversations as discovery, not selling — we ask far more than we tell. We would rather surface an awkward truth now (the books are behind, two people half-own the close, last year never fully reconciled) than discover it after we have committed to a scope. Nothing you share here is used against you; it is simply how we build an accurate picture.

What you can expect

By the end of this step you feel understood, and you can tell we have listened because we can play your finance function back to you in your own terms. That shared, accurate picture becomes the foundation everything else is built on.
